USCG Reiterates that Sexual Assault on Vessels is a Crime

Coast Guard Reminds Mariners that Sexual Assault is a Reportable Crime

Earlier this week, the United States Coast Guard issued Marine Safety Information Bulletin MSIB Number: 11-21, "Reporting Sexual Assaults on U.S. Vessels." The one-page document was a simple but crucial reminder to the marine transportation industry that sexual assault is a crime and it must be reported to the Coast Guard. The MSIB went on to recognize that sexual assaults are all too often unreported. To encourage witnesses to come forward, the Coast Guard added a link to the CG Tips App and reminded mariners to call the National Command Center at (202) 372-2100 with any relevant information (which will be handled anonymously). The Coast Guard reiterated that it will respond to any reports of sexual assault with trained investigators and will hold offenders accountable through criminal prosecution and, or, actions against USCG issued merchant mariner credentials (MMCs).
